New
Pass System at Uwharrieforwarded by John Stewart, Director of Environmental Affairs, United Four Wheel
Drive Associations
March 25, 2004
The North Carolina Uwharrie National Forest's rolling hills and pine-oak forest make it a popular destination for off-highway vehicle riders, and this year purchasing passes will be made easier. Season passes and daily passes will be sold at local area stores in order to make purchasing the passes more convenient for the general public.
In the past, the $5 trail use fee was collected on the honor system, with users placing the fee in a fee envelope and dropping it into a collection tube located at the trail head. Season passes were only available at the District Office located on Highway 24/27, one mile east of Troy, and could only be purchased during the week. The new system will allow trail users to purchase daily passes or season passes at area stores seven days a week.
Passes will be sold at Mullinix Store and the Eldorado Outpost, which are located on Hwy 109 North in the Uwharrie area, as well as at the Swift Island BP and the Uwharrie Sportsman, both located on Hwy 24/27 near Lake Tillery. Day passes are $5.00 and season passes are $30.00, with proceeds going toward the maintenance of the Off Highway Vehicle trails. OHV trail users must have their pass prominently displayed and unobscured at all times while on the trail system.
Centrally located between Charlotte and Greensboro in the Badin Lake Recreation Area, the 17 miles of OHV trails are open April 1 to December 15. Roaming the trails are riders of all-terrain vehicles, 4-wheel drives, and trail bikes. The trail system is specifically maintained and marked for OHV use.
For safety, a few rules apply to the OHV trails. Riders must stay on signed routes marked with orange diamonds. All types of OHV’s can be ridden on the trails, and alcohol is not allowed on the trail system.
