Southern HomeTellico Work Weekend

August 11 - 12, 2007

Southern Four Wheel Drive Association members held a major work weekend on August 11 - 12 at Upper Tellico ORV Area in the Nantahala National Forest. Our members bring their own equipment and SFWDA also owns a backhoe and several large construction trucks.

A group of volunteers delivered and installed heavy-duty guard rails. Another group worked on trails to repair water traps and perform other trail maintenance.

SFWDA supplied equipment and machinery:

  • 2 – 5-Ton Trucks
  • 3 – Backhoes
  • 1 – Ford 350 welding truck
  • trailers

Message from Rob Theurer:

The weekend of the 11th of August was a big one. I would like to thank everyone who made it. We were able to fix some of the problems we had on trail 5. Greg and his crew added railing to the one at the top of trail 9 to stop the illegal bypassing. Scott Campbell and his crew worked trail 11 and 12. Griff Shirley worked trail 4 between 5 and 1. We were also able to move around 40 tons of rock for trail stabilization.

Upstate Land Cruisers and Georgia Cruisers cut rhododendron from trail 8, put up signs and put out seed and fertilizer. Even with everyone scattered all over the area Gunnar and Roger were able to keep things organized and moving along. Currently I’m working on the upper end of trail 8, headed to the top of trail 9.

Our next work days are August 25th-29th. As always we need EXPERIENCED 5 ton drivers and escort drivers. If you can help out, contact or Roger (DSLTOY). Again I’d like to thank everyone who came out and helped. - ROB.

Unloading pipes to be used as a guard rail onto the welding truck.

Loading rip-rap (large gravel) with our backhoes. The rocks are used to firm up the trail surface.

Delivering rip-rap and pipes to the work site on the trail using our 5-ton truck.

Drilling holes to insert the guard rail posts.

Greg H. volunteers the use of his welding truck for trail maintenance work.
The pipes will be cut with the acetylene torch mounted on the work truck.
