Tellico
River Campgrounds News
April 2006
The Tellico Ranger District in the Cherokee National Forest (Tennessee)
is starting several projects to renovate, upgrade and reconstruct most
of the campgrounds and campsites along the Tellico River Road. The projects
will start in April 2006 and last several months. During that time, various
campgrounds will be closed for a couple of months for reconstruction.
The Cherokee National Forest goal is to improve the recreation facilities
within the Tellico River corridor. The camping and recreation use are
intense in a small area, leading to issues with natural resource protection,
sanitation, public safety, and law enforcement. The improvements include
installation of accessible vault toilets, reconfiguration of campsite
locations, and development of campsites to accommodate small groups.
Work will be performed at the following sites:
- Walnut Grove Picnic Area
- Tellico River Campground #3
- Tellico River Campground #6 (to be renamed Birch Branch)
- Davis Branch
- Tellico River Campground #7 (to be renamed Holder Cove)
- Tellico River Campground #8 (to be renamed Rough Ridge)
- Stateline Campground
The campgrounds will be modified to contain "Single Campsites"
and/or "Small Group Campsites". The new campground user fee
structure will be implemented on January 1, 2007. Until then the user
fees will remain the same.
